Volunteers make a difference
Volunteers play a critical role in how we provide quality healthcare services at Goshen Hospital. By donating their time and talents, volunteers also serve as an important bridge between the community and the hospital.
You can join this admirable group of community residents and make a difference for our patients. As a volunteer, you will need to work a minimum of two shifts per month and agree to volunteer for at least six months.
To apply, simply fill out our volunteer application.
Our volunteers directly affect patients by adding a personal touch to their care, giving compassionate guidance to families, providing ancillary services to staff and promoting the hospital’s excellence in the community.
Volunteer service areas
Red Coat Volunteers – Assist visitors in the main and outpatient lobbies. Volunteers escort patients from admissions to their appropriate units, discharge patients, provide directions and deliver daily newspapers and schedules.
Maple Corner Gift Shoppe Volunteers – Serve as cashiers, price merchandise, organize and assist the manger in daily operations of the gift shop. Volunteers work evenings, weekends and daytime shifts.
The Goshen Hospital Auxiliary operates our gift shop, which provides an important service to our patients, visitors and hospital personnel. We donate profits from the gift shop to enhance patient care and community services.
Information Desk Volunteers – Serve as receptionists in the main hospital lobby, help direct visitors to specific areas, answer general questions and dispatch Red Coats throughout the facilities. Our Red Coats and Information Desk volunteers work as a team in this area.
Patient Services Volunteers – Deliver patient mail and flowers as well as care for patient flowers and plants. Volunteers also deliver a new book daily to hospitalized children.
Center For Cancer Care Volunteers
- Infusion Room Volunteers – Assist patients in the Infusion Room by visiting with them, providing comfort, offering blankets or pillows, and ordering and delivering meal trays. Volunteers assist staff by delivering items to the lab, stocking supplies and maintaining a clean environment.
- Infusion Garden Volunteers – Help maintain the survivor garden by weeding and trimming the gardens located on the grounds of Goshen Hospital.
- Survivor Buddy Program – Enable a newly diagnosed patient to connect with a Survivor Buddy – a fellow survivor or person living with cancer who has experienced similar circumstances. As a cancer survivor, your experience could help a new patient by offering encouragement, support and practical tips in person, over the phone or via email. Volunteers with the Survivor Buddy Program must be six months post-diagnosis in order to apply.
- Survivor Network General Volunteer – Assist with events and outreach for cancer survivors.
Hospice Care Partners – Provide emotional, physical and spiritual support to terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers are part of the interdisciplinary team that provides care in the home as long as the patient and family desire.
Surgery Waiting Reception Volunteers – Serve as liaisons between surgery, recovery and families waiting for surgical patients.
Day Surgical Volunteers – Assist in prep and recovery rooms to keep patients comfortable and provide supplies to keep rooms clean.
Clerical Services Support Volunteers – Provide clerical support based on temporary or long-term needs in various departments, including Wound Center, Administration, Pain Management, Human Resources and Volunteer Office. Volunteers also help with special events and perform other duties, as needed.
Special Services Volunteers – Provide assistance to distribute magazines to hospital waiting rooms and maintain bird aviary care as well as help with Pet Partners, Retreat Fitness Center and Goshen Physician offices.
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Volunteers – Assist heart patients in a controlled exercise program. Volunteers also provide support, education and assistance to staff during patient rehabilitation sessions.
Emergency Department Ambassadors – Assist in the ER by cleaning rooms, stocking supplies, running errands and escorting patients or families. Volunteers serve as communication liaisons between families of emergency patients and Emergency Room physicians and nursing staff. They strive to alleviate anxiety of families and provide other immediate services as appropriate.
Spiritual Care Visitors – Provide spiritual care and emotional support to patients and their families. The Goshen Hospital Chaplain screens, trains and schedules these volunteers.
Substitute Volunteers – Trained in one or more volunteer areas to fill in for regularly scheduled volunteers who are unable to cover their shifts. This provides greater flexibility for volunteers who prefer flexible schedules, instead of volunteering on a specific day or time.
Lab Services Volunteers – Assist with lab kit preparation and act as a courier throughout the hospital for lab deliveries and pick ups.
Knitters – Crochet and/or knit baby hats and blankets for newborns. Volunteers also make hats for chemotherapy patients and lap blankets for inpatients. Yarn is provided by the hospital.
Pet Partners Volunteers – Provide pet visitation to hospital patients on a weekly basis. All pets are certified through the Delta Society. Volunteers and pets provide caring support and socialization for patients on all hospital units.
