Active surveillance of prostate cancer
You and your doctor may decide to closely monitor your prostate tumor growth, instead of immediately treating your prostate cancer. With active surveillance, your oncologist examines for any changes in the disease during regular appointments. Several recent studies have shown that surgery or radiation may not be necessary for less aggressive or early-stage prostate cancer. Active surveillance may be best if age and overall health conditions prohibit effective treatment.
By avoiding treatment, you may be able to postpone possible side effects, such as impotence, urinary incontinence and bowel problems.
