Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

General Information

The pelvic floor is the term used for the muscles that support the bladder, uterus (womb) and bowels. This group of muscles can become impaired during pregnancy or childbirth, strenuous exercise, changes in hormones due to menopause or as a result of prior surgeries in the abdominal or pelvic region. When this happens, you may experience incontinence, leaking of the bladder or bowels or pelvic pain when sitting, walking, urinating or having intercourse.

We understand how important good pelvic health is to feeling in control of your life and health. Through pelvic rehabilitation therapy, we can create a personalized physical therapy plan that addresses your issues and helps you regain control and reduce pain.

To participate in pelvic rehabilitation therapy, ask your primary care provider about a referral to Goshen Rehabilitation. If you don’t have a primary care provider, call (574) 537-0962 for a referral.

Symptoms of pelvic floor health issues

Symptoms may include:

  • Problems with urination – leaking with physical exertion, involuntary urinary loss or immediately preceded with a strong urge to void, waking up frequently at night to urinate
  • Inability to control bowel movements, resulting in feces leaking unexpectedly
  • Constipation
  • Pain – general pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse or pain during voiding.

These are some of the symptoms related to pelvic floor health issues you may notice, especially while pregnant or after delivering a baby. Talk to your primary care provider about a referral if you have these symptoms.

Individualized treatment

Treating the symptoms of pelvic floor health issues can include one or more of the following:

  • Exercise – to strengthen or retrain muscles and to improve coordination.
  • Biofeedback – using measuring devices, helps you to become more aware of how your body is functioning and improve pelvic floor coordination.
  • Timed voiding or bladder/bowel retraining – sometimes used in combination with biofeedback, this technique allows you to identify patterns and empty your bladder before you would otherwise leak and improve bladder/bowel habits.
  • Modalities: heat, cold, ultrasound, electrical simulation
  • Education, toileting positions and relaxation strategies

Participating in pelvic rehabilitation therapy gives you the opportunity to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, reduce pain and regain control of your bladder.
