The Elkhart County 4-H Fair is just around the corner. From July 22-30, hit the fairgrounds for exhilarating rides, fun games and entertaining local attractions — and don’t forget to make healthy food choices while you’re at it!
You’re more than welcome to bring your own food to the fairgrounds rather than eat the heavy, fried food sold at the fair. Plus, if you pack a picnic filled with healthy snacks, you won’t spend precious time waiting in line for food, and you’ll save money to spend on the games and attractions.
Here are some healthy fair essentials that will keep your family going all day long:
Fruits and vegetables. Take advantage of seasonal fruits and vegetables like peaches, berries, cherries, watermelon, tomatoes, corn, zucchini, peas and more. You can also use them to create a fresh broccoli slaw or a delicious salad.
Healthy dips. Pack up some hummus, salsa, fat-free bean dip or low-fat yogurt to dip crisp, raw vegetables in.
Wraps. For your main dish, wrap up some grilled chicken or turkey meat in a tortilla with veggies, salsa or a light dressing.
Water, sparkling water or unsweetened iced tea. It’s incredibly easy to get dehydrated at the fair, so bring your own water, sparkling water or unsweetened iced tea to keep everyone happy and hydrated.
Once you have your fair food planned, decide when you want to go to the fair. There are all kinds of exciting themed days being planned, including Veteran’s Day, Education Day, Senior Citizens’ Day, Kids’ Day, Green Earth Education Day and more.
