What is a Medically Managed Weight Loss Program?

Struggling with obesity or being overweight affects every aspect of your life. It takes a toll on your health, your self-esteem, your ability to complete daily activities and your relationships. Setting a goal to lose the extra weight is only the first step. Actually losing the weight — and keeping it off — can be a lifelong endeavor.

Quick fixes don't work. Achieving your weight loss goals requires taking the time to address the problem from every angle — physical, emotional and spiritual. If you've put yourself through every fad diet and always regained lost pounds, it may be time to talk to your doctor about a medically managed weight loss program.

A medically managed weight loss program is an individualized, physician-directed, non-surgical medical care program that offers a weight loss and maintenance plan designed to help you achieve long-term success. Plans typically include dietary recommendations based around "real food", an exercise program and/or weight loss medication.

Every aspect of the plan is monitored by your healthcare provider. You doctor will work with you to create the plan that’s the best fit for you. And you'll be accompanied on your journey by an integrated team of weight loss experts, medical staff, certified personal trainers, registered dietitians and support groups helping you share challenges and cheer successes with your peers.

At the beginning of your medically managed weight loss program, you'll be assessed for weight-related medical problems, such as sleep apnea, prediabetes, diabetes, anxiety and depression. Some medications used to treat these and other health conditions can exacerbate your weight control issues. Through medical consultation and lifestyle adjustments, a medically managed weight loss program will help you track and take control of your:

  • blood pressure
  •
heart rate
  •
blood glucose levels
  •
physical activity

  • nutrition and meal-planning

  • medications

Participating in a medically supervised weight loss program can also carry additional benefits. If you are considering bariatric surgery and have bariatric coverage, your insurance provider still may not choose to cover your procedure unless you can demonstrate your willingness to make those dietary and behavioral changes that contribute to its success.

A medically managed weight loss program can lead to better outcomes and more permanent weight loss than a non-supervised weight loss program. If you’ve struggled with weight loss, you know how hard it can be to achieve real change.
