Goshen Center for Cancer Care is first in region to offer unique breast cancer radiation treatment
Goshen, Ind. – Goshen Center for Cancer Care now offers a convenient option for patients with breast cancer undergoing surgery. Intra-Operative Radiation Treatment (IORT) allows patients to receive radiation at the time of surgery, eliminating the need for numerous post-surgery radiation treatments. The Goshen Center for Cancer Care is the first cancer center in the region to begin offering this procedure.
“There has been a growing trend towards shorter courses of radiation to reduce travel time and the burden on the patient,” says James Wheeler, MD, Ph.D, radiation oncologist, director of radiation oncology, Goshen Center for Cancer Care. “The ultimate convenience is to receive a single dose of radiation while in the operating room at the time of tumor removal. The surgical and radiation oncologists work together all at one time for the benefit of our patients.”
Dr. Wheeler has extensive training and expertise in IORT, and began offering the procedure in early June alongside Goshen Center for Cancer Care surgical oncologists.
“Women have been asking about IORT for the past two years because they want treatment that is safe, cutting edge and convenient,” says Laura Morris, MD,MBA, FACS, breast surgical oncologist, medical director at the Goshen Retreat Women’s Health Center. “Patients who qualify for IORT are able to receive their surgery and radiation at the same time, plus the treatment is more convenient without compromising outcomes.”
Goshen Center for Cancer Care provides the most advanced radiation technology with experts specializing in all forms of cancer. They have been leading the way in cancer treatment for over a decade.
