Goshen Health invests in new hybrid operating room for cardiovascular patients

This month, Goshen Hospital began using a new operating room, which allows different specialists to work together to resolve complex heart and vascular issues more efficiently. The new suite allows for performing advanced cardiac, vascular and interventional radiology procedures with minimally invasive techniques.

“This new lab allows us to work on any heart or vascular issue from head to toe – allowing us to restore circulation in the heart, abdominal aorta, legs and other major organs of the body,” said Ram Khattri Chettri, MBA-HCM, MS, MATS, NP-C, RN, Service Line Administrator of Heart and Vascular Services, Goshen Health. “And, the lab significantly increases the range of procedures we can offer our community with greater safety, imaging quality and options, reduced exposure to radiation and contrast, lower risk of complications, faster patient recovery and earlier discharge.”

While Goshen Health’s recent investment in an electrophysiology lab enables specialists to examine the electrical system of the heart, this new lab focuses on the “plumbing,” so blockages and other congenital or acquired heart and vascular conditions can be identified and addressed with stents, balloons, advanced heart and vascular device implantations, bypass and much more. This innovative lab delivers services to our community that are otherwise not available in the region.

The need for cardiovascular health care continues to rise. About one of every three deaths in the United States is due to the underlying cause of cardiovascular disease, according to the 2018 Heart Disease and Stroke Update, compiled annually by the American Heart Association, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health and other government sources.

“This new operating room is the only one of its kind in the region,” said Randy Christophel, President and CEO of Goshen Health. “Our mission is to improve the health of our community by providing innovative, outstanding care and services through exceptional people doing exceptional work. Investing in innovation is a necessary part of delivering on that promise – enabling the people in our community to receive the highest standard of medical care closer to home.”
