Professional development for nurses
Professional development is an integral part of our environment at Goshen Hospital. Our nursing staff is encouraged to pursue professional development whenever possible. Nurses can take full advantage of our ongoing in-services, continuing education and clinical advancement programs.
For nurses whose goals include an advanced nursing degree, our tuition assistance benefit helps nurses pursue their professional goals.
Philosophy of education
The basis of our philosophy of education begins with the Goshen Hospital Model for Nursing Care. We place the care of patients and their families at the center of our model and our philosophy of education. Professional practice surrounds the patient and dictates the environment of care we provide. We believe that nursing is synonymous with caring. Teaching Colleagues how to provide appropriate holistic care within an environment that is safe for both the patient and themselves is the outgrowth from the center of our philosophy. Professional performance naturally follows when Colleagues understand how education, evidence-based practice/research, leadership, collaboration, ethics and peer review work together in providing exceptional care for our patients.
Theories of teaching and adult learning are an essential part of educational offerings. We recognize that each learner is an adult with unique needs, values, beliefs, experiences and educational backgrounds. We believe that learning occurs when the learner recognizes educational experiences as meaningful and directed toward attainable goals. And our Colleague Education Department is committed to providing a diversity of learning experiences to assist the needs of the learner.
A comprehensive offering of educational resources is available through Goshen Hospital to advance professional development. Educational in-services are available, along with opportunities and the support to pursue specialty certifications in specific areas of expertise. An online self-study option for continuing education is available to both Colleagues and other healthcare providers. A simulation training lab also offers learning in a controlled environment.

Registered nurse orientation
At Goshen Hospital, each Colleague’s orientation is tailored according to individual needs and previous life experiences. On the first two days of employment, all new hires attend a combination of one general and one nursing orientation. In the following week, a comprehensive computer training course for nursing is scheduled over two half-days to learn charting in the patient record.
