Goshen, Ind. – Goshen Center for Cancer Care now offers an interactive orientation program to new patients who are starting treatment for cancer. Classes are led by a survivorship coordinator, integrative care team provider and an oncology nurse practitioner.
“We provide a comfortable relaxed environment complete with tea, water, lap quilts and stress relieving items,” says Libby Stout, survivor network coordinator, Goshen Center for Cancer Care. “Patients attending the program are also naturally forming friendships, allowing for a more nurturing environment every step of the way through a cancer journey.”
Attendees are given a guidebook, written by Goshen Center for Cancer Care oncologists and cancer specialists. The guidebook contains basic information about cancer, different types of treatment options and different recommendations for side effect management. The guidebook also has sections specific to the patients’ diagnosis, a calendar to keep track of appointments and a symptom tracker empowering patients to manage their care.
Patients are welcome to bring family and caregivers along to the session as it is designed to provide information on the center’s cancer program, as well as staging, treatment goals and the management of side effects and symptoms. The program launched in November 2016 and has had positive results.
“Patients and their loved ones that have attended the sessions have expressed how the program helped them understand different side effects and who to call with questions,” said Stout. “We are also seeing more patients utilizing our complementary services, which includes dietitians, mind-body counselors and naturopathic doctors.”
