GOSHEN, Ind. – The brand new, state-of-the-art electrophysiology lab opened for full service on February 16, 2017, on the second floor of Goshen Hospital. “Everything worked beautifully,” Dr. Mark Dixon said. “The lab was perfect. It’s on par with the best labs in the country. It has the same state-of-the-art technology you’d get at any research hospital.”
“Planning for the lab has been in the works for a little over a year,” said Ram Khattri Chettri, MBA-HCM, MS, MATS, NP-C, RN, director of heart and vascular services, Goshen Health. “But it was worth the wait. We built this for our community.”
This community may need it more than others, given that Indiana’s rates of atrial fibrillation or A-fib, the most common heart arrhythmia, are well above the national average. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation nationally averages between 1 and 2 percent. Over the last three years, more than 10 percent of patients admitted to Goshen Hospital had either a primary or secondary diagnosis of atrial fibrillation. (Indiana as a state has higher than national rates of obesity, tobacco use and diabetes – all of which are risk factors for atrial fibrillation.) Seeing the need in the community was what started Goshen Hospital staff planning for a new lab.
“Building this electrophysiology lab is the most recent example of how Goshen Health is investing in innovative care for the good of the community,” said Randy Christophel, president and CEO, Goshen Health. “We’re pleased this lab will enable more people to receive care they need here – without having to leave the area for these life-saving procedures.”
The new lab also has another benefit for both patients and medical providers: reduced exposure to radiation. The new 3-D mapping system allows 3-D images to be superimposed over X-ray images, reducing the number of X-rays needed.
Nationally, six million Americans have atrial fibrillation – irregular heartbeat. About 2 million haven’t been diagnosed yet.
