GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen Heart & Vascular Center now offers patients a unique, non-invasive approach to reverse cardiac disease: Dr. Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease. Commonly known as Ornish Lifestyle Medicine™, this innovative solution addresses the root causes of heart disease rather than just its symptoms, and offers participants another option — in addition to drugs or surgery — to take control of their health: lifestyle as medicine.
Grounded in nearly four decades of clinical research, Ornish Lifestyle Medicine is the first program scientifically-proven to reverse the progression of heart disease. Over 18 sessions, the program helps participants optimize four key areas of their lives: exercise, stress management, group support and nutrition.
This month, U.S. News & World Report recognized Ornish for having the Number 1 heart-healthy diet – for the eighth year in a row (since the publication began ranking nutrition plans). Criteria included ease of compliance, likelihood of losing weight in the short and long term and effectiveness against cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The Ornish program incorporates a whole-food, plant-based plan that is abundant in nutrient-rich whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes and limited amounts of nuts, seeds and nonfat dairy products.
Goshen Heart & Vascular Center is the only facility in Indiana and Michigan offering Ornish Lifestyle Medicine. The first group will start in mid-February.
“This program is an excellent addition to the heart and vascular services we offer,” said Randy Christophel, Goshen Health President and Chief Executive Officer. “Given the prevalence of cardiovascular health issues in the communities we serve, we are excited to introduce Ornish Lifestyle Medicine as another proven approach to treat heart disease. By empowering and enhancing the quality of life of many patients, the program supports us in our mission to improve the health of our communities.”
The program, research and Dr. Ornish himself have been featured widely in Newsweek, TIME, U.S. News & World Report and The New York Times. “My colleagues and I are helping to create a new paradigm of health care – one based on addressing the underlying causes of heart disease and many other chronic diseases,” said Dr. Ornish. “My vision has always been to sustainably transform lives for the better by making simple lifestyle choices. With each new site to offer our program, we continue to make that vision a reality.”
Ornish Lifestyle Medicine is reimbursed by Medicare and other commercial payers for qualified individuals.
