GOSHEN, Ind. – On October 8, 2017, 412 people participated in the 13th annual Middlebury Walks for a Cure 5K Walk/Run. This was up from last year’s total of 306. The event raised $12,156, which will benefit Goshen Center for Cancer Care and United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
Garcia Salvador came in first in the 5K run, with a time of 20:35.3. Next was Jerald Schrock with 20:55.0. Keeton LeBaron, whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, came in third with a time of 21:31.6.
The Pretty in Pink competition stole the show, with 97 people dressing up. Top three were Jean Beachler, Zach Wright and Charlotte Krop. Beachler, who placed first, took the microphone and said, “I am not a cancer person. I’ve never had cancer. But my daughter was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and my sister died of ovarian cancer. She wasn’t even 50.”
“Research in cancer care is very important,” said Dr. Roderich Schwarz, medical director, Goshen Center for Cancer Care. “But just as important is living a healthy lifestyle and preventing cancer. This event helps us do both – provide financial support for cancer research and patients and get some exercise.” Dr. Schwarz also ran in the 5K race.
“Getting a cancer diagnosis is the scariest and most expensive thing that has ever happened to a person. Because of events like this, United Cancer Services can provide emotional and financial support to people facing a cancer diagnosis,” said Peter Norton, executive director of United Cancer Services.
Middlebury Walks for a Cure was created in 2005 by Nean Smith, a lifelong Middlebury resident and breast cancer survivor. Today, organizers of the event are Goshen Health and United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
This not-for-profit event continues to be a grass-roots effort which raises funds to benefit cancer patients and programs throughout Elkhart and surrounding counties in northern Indiana.
Donations for these, and other programs, can be made year round by contacting the Goshen Health Foundation at (574) 364-2457 or online at GoshenHealth.com/Foundation.
