GOSHEN, Ind. – Leonard Henry, MD, MBA, FACS, has been appointed Medical Director for Goshen Center for Cancer Care. His responsibilities include developing clinical programs and services and recruiting providers. Dr. Henry will continue his clinical practice in surgical oncology.
Under Dr. Henry’s leadership, the cancer center will focus on developing its strategy to become the destination of choice for patients, payers and referring providers in northern Indiana.
“We have special expertise that’s not common in other cancer programs in our area,” Dr. Henry said. “We want to increase awareness of our strengths and act as resource for other provider.”
“In the past, patients have gone out of the area, even out of the state for their cancer treatment,” said Randy Christophel, Goshen Health President and Chief Executive Officer. “We offer integrated oncology services and innovative care right here that are on par with well-known cancer centers that are hours and states away.”
The cancer center was first in the region to offer surgery and radiation treatment at the same time for women with certain types of breast cancer. It also is the only area treatment center that offers surgery and chemotherapy during one procedure for patients with cancers in the abdominal areas.
“The way we approach cancer care is different here,” said Dr. Henry. “No other cancer program focuses on patient-centered care, the patient experience and integrating cancer care services better than we do,” he said.
Dr. Henry is a board-certified surgeon and fellowship-trained surgical oncologist. He joined the cancer center in 2010, after serving 15 years in the U.S. Navy. During his military service, Dr. Henry rose to the rank of commander. He served as a staff surgical oncologist at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, and at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Henry received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his residency in general surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Henry received advanced training during a fellowship in surgical oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
In 2015, Dr. Henry graduated from the Business of Medicine MBA program at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in Indianapolis. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame, graduating class of 1991.
