Patients with cancer who are coming to Goshen have a place to stay

GOSHEN, Ind. – Patients of the Goshen Center for Cancer Care – and their families – have a place to stay when they come to Goshen for treatments. Conveniently located behind Goshen Hospital, the Marian Hoogenboom CARE House offers free lodging for patients who travel 50 miles or more to receive health care at the cancer center.

The house has four suites, each with a private bathroom. The house also has a shared living room, dining room, laundry facilities and kitchen so guests can prepare their own meals.

One patient from Morgantown, Ind., Tracey White estimates that she’s spent half her time in Goshen since her first surgery at the Goshen Center for Cancer Care three years ago. “We would never have been able to afford it,” White said. “People even gave my husband and mother money and bought them food to help out.” “That place is like a second home to us. If we didn’t have the CARE House, I don’t know how we would have made it.”

The idea for the CARE House came from the physicians group that later became Goshen Physicians. They wanted to establish a house where people with cancer and their caregivers could stay while undergoing treatment. With the help of numerous volunteers and donations, the construction began on the house. The Hoogenboom family approached the CARE Foundation and offered to help finish the construction of the CARE House in memory of Mrs. Marian Hoogenboom. She had been a dedicated volunteer and friend of the hospital, as well as a patient with cancer.

“People need help when they’re going through cancer,” said Karen Boyd, who has served on the CARE Foundation board since its beginning. “This house has touched all of us on the board. We’re committed to providing this safe place to people who have no options. We want people to feel welcome, at home and comfortable at CARE House.” The CARE House was opened in 2002 and relies on donations.

Many patients with cancer have chosen to come to the Goshen Center for Cancer Care because they knew they could stay at the CARE House.
