    Biography

    Sachin Agarwal, MD, is a board certified medical oncologist who specializes in cancers of the reproductive organs and urinary system. He treats cancers of the bladder and kidneys. For men, he treats prostate, testes and penis cancers; for women, he treats gynecologic (cervical, uterus, ovaries and fallopian) cancers. Other areas of specialization include thoracic oncology and hematology, such as anemias and low blood counts. He also holds board certification in internal medicine and has extensive clinical, research and teaching experience in the oncology field. Dr. Agarwal uses advanced drug therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted therapies, to treat patients with cancers of the gynecologic and genitourinary systems.

    Dr. Agarwal stands at the leading edge of research to identify important biologic markers that determine which patients are at greatest risk of advanced disease and metastasis. Dr. Agarwal has earned numerous honors and awards for his research, including important studies on immunotherapy at MD Anderson Cancer Center. His clinical trials research has been recognized in prestigious, peer-reviewed publications from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

    Karen Alkema, MS, LMHC, is a mind-body counselor at Goshen Center for Cancer Care.     Karen Alkema is passionate about assisting people through the process of dealing with cancer. Her goal is to help patients and loved ones reduce anxiety while creating and maintaining a sense of hope. She assists patients in improving the quality of their lives by using evidence-based strategies to minimize stress and cope in healthy ways.

    As a mind-body counselor, she works not only with patients but also their loved ones including children and adults to ensure all receive the support they need to cope with stressors related to cancer. Her goal is to help all patients and their loved ones thrive in the midst of cancer.

    Research Interest

    Karen is committed to researching the most effective strategies to minimize distress in cancer patients and their loved ones. She has been involved in a number of grantfunded programs researching novel interventions to quickly identify and effectively address cancer-related stress. One example was the Screening for Psychosocial Distress Program presented in partnership with Yale School of Nursing and the American Psychosocial Oncology Society; funded by the National Cancer Institute.

    Karen also took part in the Implementing Comprehensive Biopsychosocial Screening Program presented by City of Hope and funded by the National Cancer Institute. She has published original research and presented nationally regarding the incidence of burnout and compassion fatigue in medical professionals as well as effective coping strategies.

    Larry Allen, MD, is a board certified primary care physician who practices at Goshen Physicians Family Medicine Syracuse. He has practiced medicine in the community since 1994 and serves as the chief medical executive of Goshen Health.     Dr. Kehinde Animashaun, MD, CHB, FAAP, is a board certified pediatrician who practices at Goshen Physicians Pediatrics. She is dedicated to improving the health of our community by providing expert medical care for newborns to 18-year olds. She believes health education is the best way to empower her patients. With a genuine concern for the well-being of children, Dr. Animashaun has worked in the areas of rehabilitation, research and patient care for more than 33 years.
