Max Mertz, MD, is a board certified family physician with more than three decades of experience providing high quality, individualized care. By serving not only as a doctor but also as a leader of numerous health care organizations in Northern Indiana, he has dedicated his career to helping patients and their families get the care they deserve. Dr. Mertz graduated with highest distinction from the Indiana University School of Medicine. After finishing his family practice residency, he opened his own private practice before joining Goshen Physicians in 1996. He served as the president of the Elkhart County Health Board, Director Emeritus of the Goshen Hospital and Healthcare Foundation, Medical Director of Indiana Lakes Managed Care Organization and Medical Director of Goshen Home Care & Hospice, to name a few. When he’s not treating patients of all ages, he enjoys reading, bicycle riding, and spending time with his wife, Lydia, and their four children.

Dr. Mertz emphasizes trying to prevent illnesses and, if they develop, to manage and reduce the complications. He tries to involve patients in their own care and help them improve their lives. Dr. Mertz uses the latest medical advancements to ensure that his patients and their families have convenient access to a wide spectrum of comprehensive medical care, all backed by the full support of Goshen Health.
Family practice is the perfect fit for Dr. Mertz’s wide range of interests. He cares for patients of all ages and is especially interested in preventive care. Dr. Mertz provides treatment for hypertension, diabetes, asthma, depression, osteoporosis and other common conditions. He has experience performing a broad range of medical procedures, including allergen immunotherapy, arthrocentesis, circumcision, destruction of skin lesions and skin tags removal. Dr. Mertz is Medical Director for Goshen Health’s hospice program and has done additional training to provide care for patients with life-limiting illnesses.
