    Biography

    Houman Vaghefi, MD, MS, PhD, is a board certified radiation oncologist at Goshen Center for Cancer Care. He applies advanced internal and external therapies to deliver targeted doses of radiation for treating patients with cancer, while reducing side effects and improving patient outcomes. His expertise extends across a wide range of cancers, including prostate, colorectal, breast, lung, and head and neck cancers, CNS malignancies as well as gynecologic, gastrointestinal and genitourinary malignancies and rare tumors.

    Philosophy of Care

    Dr. Vaghefi believes that a patient’s quality of life is as important as treating the disease. He also knows family members and other support networks play an important role in a patient’s outcome and well-being. Dr. Vaghefi’s holistic, multidisciplinary approach includes interacting with primary care physicians, naturopathic doctors and others important in the overall care and health of the patient.

    Urs von Holzen is dedicated to fighting cancer as a surgical and thoracic oncologist. He is board certified and fellowship trained in surgical oncology and thoracic oncology. Dr. von Holzen specializes in minimally invasive techniques to remove cancer.

    Dr. von Holzen brings a tireless commitment to offering daily hope to patients with cancer, as well as cancer survivors and caregivers. He is committed to offering each patient unique, personal and customized care. As part of a multidisciplinary cancer care team, he ensures that patients receive treatment that fits their needs and maintains their quality of life.

    Clinical Interest

    Multidisciplinary care for patients with thoracic and esophageal cancer holds strong interest for Dr. von Holzen. He is also devoted to minimally invasive abdominal procedures. Dr. von Holzen led a collaborative effort to develop a free lung screening program at Goshen Health. The non-invasive screening gives hope to individuals at high risk of developing lung cancer by diagnosing the disease at an earlier stage when treatment can be more successful.

    Research Interest

    In his dedication to fighting cancer, Dr. von Holzen leads a cancer research laboratory at the Harper Cancer Research Institute in South Bend, where he is the principal investigator on research projects for novel and more effective therapeutic strategies for esophageal cancer. He has served as the principal investigator examining the role of the dsRNA activated protein kinase PKR in E2F-1 gene therapy with the Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowship for Prospective Researchers. He has participated in research studies on esophageal cancer as well as surgical outcome studies. His articles have appeared in peer-reviewed publications, such as International Journal of Cancer, Clinical Cancer Research, Cancer Gene Therapy, Journal of Immunotherapy, Translational Oncology and Annals of Surgical Oncology. Included among his honors and awards are the President Surgical Section of the Swiss Group of Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK) and AQC Analysis Award by Ethicon Endo-Surgery Switzerland. Dr. von Holzen received the Hope Award from the American Cancer Society in 2017.
