Healing through acupuncture

Acupuncture is based on a traditional Chinese medicine principle that energy flows through pathways in the body called meridians. That energy can be redirected or balanced by insertion of fine, sterile needles at defined points on the body.

In modern medicine, research on acupuncture suggests an interaction with the nervous system and the endocrine system. Studies have shown distinct benefits with acupuncture for a wide range of conditions.

  • Pain (joint pain and neuropathic pain)
  • Digestive conditions (slow digestion, irritable bowel syndrome)
  • Headaches
  • Hot flashes
  • Anxiety/Depression

Most patients feel a sense of relaxation and renewal after an acupuncture treatment and include it as part of a preventive healthcare regimen.

What to expect

Everyone responds differently to acupuncture treatments. You may feel nothing during or after the first treatment. Acupuncture may have an additive effect. With regular treatments, you will experience effects that last longer with each treatment.

We recommend that you schedule a series of appointments in advance. One treatment per week for four to six weeks is typically sufficient time to notice a change in how you feel. The goal is for you to maintain that effect with longer time intervals between treatments, until you eventually need an occasional “tune up.”

Acupuncture uses very thin stainless-steel needles to access specific points along meridians. Certain areas of the body may be heated under a heat lamp while the needles are in place. Additional techniques a practitioner may determine are necessary include cupping, Gua sha, massage, electro-acupuncture or ear pellets.

Acupuncturist training

Your practitioner is a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.). In Indiana, licensing requirements include completion of a master’s degree in Acupuncture with over 1,000 hours of clinical training. Candidates also must pass a national board exam to prove competency in safety and knowledge.

Insurance coverage

Most insurance companies do not cover acupuncture services. If your insurance includes coverage, we can provide the needed codes and documentation for you to file independently to receive reimbursements.

We offer free acupuncture consultations. For treatment, we expect payment at the time of your appointment.
