Cancer Care

What is blood cancer?

Blood cancer affects your lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system. It includes your bone marrow and blood cells. Bone marrow is where blood cells develop.

Blood cancer types include:

  • Leukemia – causes an abnormal amount of immature white blood cells that crowd out normal white blood cells
  • Myeloma – affects your bone marrow and plasma cells (white blood cells that produce antibodies) and causes problems with excess antibody production
  • Lymphoma – causes abnormal lymphocytes (type of white blood cell) to multiply and overwhelm multiple organs throughout the body

A diagnosis of blood cancer can be scary. Our team at Goshen Center for Cancer Care helps take away some of that fear. With our fully integrated care for blood cancer in Goshen, IN, we address your complete well-being, not just cancer.

How to spot blood cancer symptoms

You may not notice the signs of blood cancer until you’ve had it for months or even years. General symptoms include:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Headache
  • Night sweats
  • Joint and bone pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • Weight loss

Other blood cancer symptoms are related to the abnormal levels of blood cells, including:

  • Anemia (low levels of red blood cells), making you feel weak and tired
  • Low level of platelets needed for normal blood clotting, causing bruising, easy bleeding and tiny red spots under the skin
  • Difficulty fighting off infections, leading to frequent infections, swollen glands, fevers and chills
