Symptoms of DVT

A blood clot can cause no symptoms for some, while others experience pain. The most common symptoms of deep vein thrombosis are:

  • Leg pain
  • Warmth and redness in the leg
  • Swelling

If a blood clot breaks off and travels through the bloodstream, it can lodge in the lung and lead to a pulmonary embolism (PE). This causes symptoms of shortness of breath and coughing up blood.

PE is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. If you experience symptoms of a pulmonary embolism, such as chest pain, a rapid heart rate or difficulty breathing, call 911.
