Heart and Vascular
Keeping leg veins clear of DVT
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a vascular disease that occurs when a blood clot develops in a vein deep within the body, usually in the legs. Blood clots prevent the smooth flow of blood and oxygen throughout your body and can be a serious health condition. Good blood flow leads to less pain, better flexibility and more energy. That's why we offer complete heart and vascular care for deep vein thrombosis in Goshen, IN, at Goshen Heart & Vascular Center.
Our multidisciplinary team works together to provide innovative care specifically for you. We offer noninvasive and painless vascular screenings to detect problems. These tests check your body's circulatory system to see signs of disease or impairment to blood flow.
Talk to your primary care provider about receiving one of our heart screenings. Or, if you want to talk to someone at the Heart & Vascular Center, call (574) 537-5000 to make an appointment.
Symptoms of DVT
A blood clot can cause no symptoms for some, while others experience pain. The most common symptoms of deep vein thrombosis are:
- Leg pain
- Warmth and redness in the leg
- Swelling
If a blood clot breaks off and travels through the bloodstream, it can lodge in the lung and lead to a pulmonary embolism (PE). This causes symptoms of shortness of breath and coughing up blood.
PE is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. If you experience symptoms of a pulmonary embolism, such as chest pain, a rapid heart rate or difficulty breathing, call 911.
What causes deep vein thrombosis?
Blood that pools in the legs and doesn’t constantly flow can lead to deep vein thrombosis.
Some common situations that lead to blood clots include:
- Injury to the inner lining of a vein from surgery, inflammation or fractures
- Extended periods of immobility, such as after surgery or during bed rest
- Medical conditions that cause the blood to clot
Medications that increase blood clotting, such as birth control pills and other hormone therapies
