What's causing your back pain? Discography can help
Discography, or discogram, creates high-quality images of your spinal discs. This minimally invasive test allows your provider to see which discs, if any, are causing pain. With our advanced imaging suite at Goshen Physicians Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, we provide discography in Goshen, IN. With your discography results, our team will collaborate to find an option that works for you.
As part of our comprehensive approach to treating orthopedic conditions, our multidisciplinary team accurately diagnoses and treats a wide range of back and spine conditions. To make an appointment, call (574) 534-2548.
What is discography?
Discography uses the injection of a contrast liquid to temporarily reproduce back pain. During the test, your technician will inject this contrast dye into each disc to assess the location of the pain. X-rays or CT scans are used to create pictures to capture a detailed evaluation of your lower spine.
Your provider may recommend discography if your back pain has persisted for several months. If medications and physical therapy haven’t been successful, then a discogram may be the solution to finding the cause of your back pain.
What to expect
A specially trained technician will perform your discogram. The test begins with the lower back being clean and prepared for the injection. Although you’ll be awake, you will receive a light sedative to keep you relaxed. As the technician injects the contrast dye, he or she will ask you to communicate if there’s pain and the severity.
As a minimally invasive procedure, a discogram takes about one hour to complete and you can go home on the same day.
To recover safely after a discography:
- Apply ice packs and take pain medicine to relieve pain and soreness.
- Have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours after the test.
- Contact your doctor if pain persists or worsens after your discography.
