Get the right diagnosis with EMG tests

When it comes to our approach for treating orthopedic conditions, we work hard to find the root cause of the problem. That’s why we use electromyography to make accurate diagnoses. Electromyography (EMG) tests read the electrical activity in muscles and nerves to determine what’s causing the symptoms.

At Goshen Physicians Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, we offer EMG tests in Goshen, IN, to provide quality treatment. We use the latest advancements in diagnostics to provide comprehensive orthopedic care. Call (574) 534-2548 for an appointment.

What is an EMG test?

Special motor nerves control your muscles. Sometimes, the muscles or the nerves themselves are causing the problem. An EMG test works by reading the electrical activity of your muscles and nerves to see how they are performing/functioning and what areas of your body they’re affecting. If you’re experiencing pain, muscle weakness or numbness, an EMG test may be able to pinpoint the cause of the abnormality.

We use EMG tests to help diagnose:

What to expect from electromyography

A trained technician will perform your EMG test by inserting thin needles through your skin into the muscles. Electrodes attached to the needles will send signals to a computer monitor, which records the activity in your muscles and nerves. Your technician may ask you to contract your muscles to see how they respond to stimulation.

Some people undergo a nerve conduction test during their EMG. This noninvasive test sends mild electrical impulses to your nerves.

To get the best results, avoid using lotions or skin creams on the day of your test and inform your technician if you’re taking blood-thinning medications.
