What is a Lisfranc injury?
A Lisfranc injury is a ligament tear, bone fracture or dislocation in the middle of your foot. It is named after Jacques Lisfranc de St. Martin, a 19th century surgeon who pioneered operations at the joints of the midfoot.
A midfoot injury can be difficult to diagnose, and Lisfranc fractures and dislocations are serious conditions that require medical treatment and possibly surgery. Rely on Goshen Physicians Orthopedics & Sports Medicine for the integrated, leading-edge care you need. What's causing my midfoot pain?
Lisfranc injuries are usually related to trauma, including both low and high-velocity accidents.
Midfoot injuries occur from movements as such:
- Twisting the foot while playing soccer or football
- Being stepped on by another player
- Falling or jumping and landing on your feet
- Landing awkwardly when stepping off a curb
You may notice Lisfranc injury symptoms such as:
- Midfoot (arch) pain, especially pain that gets worse when you try to bear weight on the affected foot
- Swelling on the top of the foot
- Bruising, especially on the bottom of the foot
These symptoms are similar to those of a sprained foot so make sure you see one of our experienced sports medicine specialists for a correct diagnosis.
Treatment for Lisfranc fractures, dislocations and more
If you suspect a midfoot soft tissue or bone injury, come to Goshen Physicians Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. An early diagnosis is important to successful treatment. Your provider can determine the extent of the injury and recommend a personalized treatment plan to prevent deformity and future disability. We can also show you ways to prevent another foot injury.
If your Lisfranc injury is mild, you need to avoid bearing weight on your foot for several weeks. Multiple Lisfranc fractures or dislocations may require orthopedic surgery. After surgery, you will work with a physical therapist at Goshen Rehabilitation to regain strength and flexibility in your foot. Goshen Rehabilitation is located in the same building as our orthopedics and sports medicine center, and our teams coordinate scheduling to provide a seamless patient experience.
