Treating early-stage breast cancer with lumpectomy

If you have been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, your doctor may recommend a lumpectomy. This breast cancer surgery removes the breast tumor and a small amount of surrounding normal tissue. Your surgeon may also remove lymph nodes to see if the cancer has spread. Lumpectomy is also called partial mastectomy, breast-sparing surgery, breast-conserving surgery or wide excision.

At Goshen Center for Cancer Care, our goal is to heal your cancer while protecting your quality of life. Our board certified, fellowship trained surgical oncologists specialize in breast preservation surgery that offers less stress and apprehension than ever before. Many women with early stage breast cancer can have partial breast radiation after lumpectomy with the same results as a total mastectomy.

Our multispeciality care model addresses your complete well-being – mind, body and spirit. To learn more about your options for lumpectomy in Goshen, IN, request an appointment or call (888) 492-4673 (HOPE) to talk with our oncology information specialists.

Lumpectomy surgery and recovery at Goshen Center for Cancer Care

If lumpectomy is part of your treatment, we can guide you as you prepare for surgery and recovery. You can go home the same day as your lumpectomy. Keep these tips in mind during your lumpectomy recovery time:

  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Wear a supportive bra both day and night to minimize movement and swelling.
  • You will have pain and discomfort, but call your doctor if the pain gets worse.
  • For about a week, you may have a small tube to drain fluids at the surgery site. Your care team will show you how to drain the fluid before you go home.

As part of our uniquely integrated environment, your lumpectomy procedure is seamlessly blended with other advanced breast cancer treatments, including medical and radiation therapies, naturopathic medicine and nutrition, as well as supportive services to offer the most complete care available.
