Understanding lung cancer stages and your treatment options

Lung cancer is staged to determine the best treatment and your prognosis. The stage depends on the tumor size, how deeply it has grown into the lung and whether cancer has spread to your lymph nodes or other organs.

At every stage of lung cancer, Goshen Center for Cancer Care addresses your complete well-being with leading-edge treatments, integrative therapies and a supportive network. If you need a second opinion or a team of experts to treat your lung cancer stage in Goshen, IN, request an appointment or call (888) 492-4673 (HOPE) to talk with our oncology information specialists.

What are the stages of lung cancer?

  • Stage 1 - Cancer has grown in the lung tissue but remains in the lungs. Surgery is our standard treatment, but radiation is another option for stage 1 lung cancer.
  • Stage 2 - Stage 2 lung cancer means that the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes. It’s treated with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.
  • Stage 3 - This stage may be referred to as locally advanced disease. This means the cancer may be in the lymph nodes throughout the chest or nearby tissues but hasn’t spread to distant body sites. We combine surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to treat stage 3 lung cancer.
  • Stage 4 - Stage 4 lung cancer is widespread and affects distant body sites. Our team may consider surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapies and immunotherapy. A cure may not be possible at this stage. Our goal is to relieve symptoms, control the cancer and prolong your life.
