Cancer Care

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is the most common type of pleural cancer, which develops in the pleura, or thin tissue covering the lungs. It affects about 3,000 Americans every year and is considered a rare cancer.

At Goshen Center for Cancer Care, our team of oncologists, naturopathic physicians and mind-body counselors treat rare and complex cancers, including mesothelioma, in Goshen and Warsaw, IN. We approach cancer differently from any other facility in our region. Request an appointment or call (888) 492-4673 (HOPE) to learn more about how we care for your whole being.

Mesothelioma causes and symptoms

Exposure to asbestos is the main cause of mesothelioma and is responsible for up to 80 percent of cases. Breathing in asbestos fibers causes inflammation and scarring in the pleura. The damage affects your pleural cells and can lead to uncontrolled cell growth and cancer.

It’s easy to overlook early mesothelioma symptoms because they may seem vague or minor. As the disease progresses, you may notice:

  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain that feels worse with breathing
  • Fever or night sweats
  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent cough
  • Loss of appetite and unintended weight loss

See a doctor if you notice these symptoms, especially if you’ve been exposed to asbestos. Whether or not you have cancer, the earlier you have a diagnosis, the better the outcome.

Exceptional care for your whole self during mesothelioma treatment

While it can be difficult to treat mesothelioma, Goshen Center for Cancer Care always strives to protect your quality of life while effectively fighting the cancer. Mesothelioma doesn’t usually grow as a tumor, but instead spreads along surfaces in the body. A combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy may be recommended to treat this this type of cancer. For your convenience, you may receive chemotherapy at both our Goshen and Warsaw locations.

Integrative therapies are also part of your treatment plan as a way to care for your physical, emotional and mental well-being. You can also participate in a support group and other activities for current patients and survivors through our survivor network program.
