Minimally invasive precision with robotic-assisted surgery

How robotic-assisted surgery works

Unlike conventional surgery, robotic technology gives the surgeon a highly magnified view of the patient’s anatomy. Specially designed instruments allow a surgeon to operate through a number of small incisions, instead of one large incision.

Sitting at a master console, the surgeon maneuvers the robotic arms, which securely hold the surgical instruments and a high-resolution endoscopic camera. The surgeon simply moves his or her hands to move the instruments or reposition the camera. The robotic arms allow the surgeon to perform the surgery through a few small “keyhole” entrances, manipulate the tissue with great precision and remove glands while minimizing harm to surrounding tissue. After the procedure, the patient is left with only a few small marks from the incisions and none of the scars normally associated with traditional surgery.

When conducted by an experienced surgeon, robotic-assisted surgery is a much more accurate operation than traditional open surgery. The 3-D view provided by the camera and the dexterity of the robotic hands allow the surgeon to maneuver through and around nerves and vital structures.
