What is ovarian cancer?
Having ovarian cancer means there are malignant cells in your ovaries, the reproductive gland that makes eggs. Each year, more than 20,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. At Goshen Center for Cancer Care, we understand that there’s a person attached to each case. We treat the whole you, not just your cancer, with personalized, advanced care.
If you’ve been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Goshen, IN, or a surrounding area, request an appointment or call (888) 492-4673 (HOPE) to talk with our oncology information specialists.
When to see your doctor for ovarian cancer symptoms and risk factors
Since your ovaries are deep in your abdomen, it’s hard to find ovarian cancer in its early stages. That means it may not be diagnosed until the cancer is in advanced stages and you show signs of ovarian cancer, including:
- Bloating or constipation
- Back, pelvic or abdominal pain
- Pain during sex
- Menstrual changes
- Changes in urinary habits, like having to go frequently or urgently
- Appetite changes, such as having trouble eating, feeling full quickly or getting an upset stomach
There’s no screening for ovarian cancer, so make sure you see your doctor if you have these symptoms. This is especially true if you have ovarian cancer risk factors, such as:
- Estrogen hormone replacement therapy for at least five years
- Caucasian race
- Personal or family history of ovarian, colon or breast cancer
- Mutation in genes such as BRCA1, BRCA2 or PTEN
- First full-term pregnancy after age 35 or never being pregnant
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
