Professional development for nurses
We believe in the professional potential and personal wellness of each nurse by supporting life-long learning through certification, education and professional development opportunities. Nurses can take full advantage of our ongoing in-services, leadership development and continuing education programs. Goshen Hospital is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education through the American Nursing Credentialing Center, allowing nurses to earn nursing contact hours at no cost.
Certification and degree advancement
Certification demonstrates advanced knowledge and expertise. As a Magnet designated organization, we encourage and support achieving specialty certifications and pay for the certification exam. We recognize certified nurses for their accomplishment on certified nurse’s day. For nurses whose goals include an advanced nursing degree, our tuition assistance benefit helps nurses pursue their professional goals.
Philosophy of education
Theories of teaching and adult learning are an essential part of educational offerings. We recognize that each learner is an adult with unique needs, values, beliefs, experiences and educational backgrounds. We believe that learning occurs when the learner recognizes educational experiences as meaningful and directed toward attainable goals. Our Colleague Education Department is committed to providing a variety of learning experiences to meet the needs of the learner.
Educational opportunities
A comprehensive offering of educational resources is available through Goshen Hospital to advance professional development. In addition to live classes, we offer computer based learning and have a new simulation lab. Our simulation lab includes a high fidelity mannequin designed for realistic clinical scenarios. Simulation promotes skill acquisition, enhances teamwork and improves communication. Individuals and teams can learn in a safe, controlled environment away from the clinical setting with a goal of increasing patient safety.
Registered nurse orientation
At Goshen Hospital, each Colleague’s orientation is tailored according to individual needs and previous life experiences. In the first week of employment, all new nurses attend a combination of general and nursing orientation. A comprehensive computer training course helps nurses learn charting in the patient record. Each new nurse is paired with a preceptor to complete the orientation process in their department of hire.
- RN residency program for newly licensed nurses
As a newly licensed nurse at Goshen Hospital, you will receive mentoring from an experienced nurse, build relationships with peers and participate in engaging learning experiences in a supportive environment.
- Student nurse opportunities
For nursing students, we offer paid opportunities that build on your class work and develop your hands-on abilities. In many cases, these positions lead to employment here once you have earned your degree.
- Summer Patient Care Extern Program
Goshen Hospital's Patient Care Extern Program is offered during the summer for nursing students entering their senior year. This program offers nursing students the opportunity to enhance their skills as they prepare to become Registered Nurses. Patient care externs work with a designated RN preceptor during the program. In addition, the patient care externs are given the option to shadow in other departments, for example, spending a day in the Cardiovascular Lab, ICU or the operating room.
