Feel tired all the time? Take a sleep assessment quiz

Here’s an easy self-assessment tool called STOP BANG that can help you understand your risk for obstructive sleep apnea. The higher the score on the 8-point scale, the more severe your risk.

How Do You Sleep?

S
Do you snore loudly?
T   Do you often feel tired, fatigued or sleepy during daytime?
O   Has anyone observed you stop breathing during your sleep?
P   Do you have or are you being treated for high blood pressure?
B   Is your BMI greater than 35?
A   Are you over age 50?
N   Is your neck circumference greater than 16 inches?
G   Are you a male?

Score: 0-2 low risk, 3-4 intermediate, 5-8 high risk

If you scored higher than 5, talk to your primary care provider about having a sleep assessment or contact Goshen Sleep & Allergy Medicine.

Sleep apnea raises your risk of serious health problems

Even though sleep disorders are common for people of all ages, you may not know you have a sleep problem, especially with sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea can lead to unexplained daytime sleepiness, headaches and difficulty concentrating. Your sleep problem may stem from serious health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes or chronic pain. Medications can also cause sleep disturbances.

Risk assessments don’t diagnose sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. However, they can evaluate your risk or likelihood of having a sleep disorder. It’s the first step in diagnosing the underlying problem.
