Symptoms of tendinitis

Pain when moving the inflamed tendon is the most common symptom. You may also notice tenderness in the area and mild swelling.

Other signs and symptoms of tendinitis include:

  • Joint pain
  • Dull, achy pain at rest
  • Weakness of the muscle attached to the tendon
  • Hearing or feeling a snapping or grinding sound when moving the tendon

Causes and related symptoms

Using a tendon repeatedly in the same way can put stress on it. Eventually, this repetitive movement will wear the tendon down and lead to an overuse injury, such as tendinitis. Golf, tennis and other sports are leading causes of the different types of tendinitis, including golfer’s elbow. Sometimes an acute injury or trauma is the cause.

Aging is also a risk factor for tendinitis, as it is for joint degeneration. Overtime, your tendons slowly weaken and become more prone to injury. That’s why it’s common to experience joint pain along with the symptoms of tendinitis.
