General Information
Throat cancer affects any of the two main areas of the throat – the pharynx and the larynx, commonly known as the voice box. Throat cancer is one of the more common types of head and neck cancer.

Throat cancer symptoms
The tumor’s location in the throat affects how the symptoms appear.
People with throat cancer may experience:
- Hoarseness or voice changes
- Chronic sore throat or bad breath
- Chronic nasal congestion and stuffiness that may worsen with time
- Difficulty swallowing or pain with swallowing
- Ear pain
- Trouble breathing or noisy breathing
- Trouble moving the tongue or opening the mouth fully
- Lump or mass in the back of the mouth, throat or neck
- Unintended weight loss
Some noncancerous conditions can cause symptoms similar to throat cancer symptoms. See your primary care provider if you experience these symptoms for more than a couple of weeks.
What causes throat cancer?
Tobacco is linked to the vast majority of all head and neck cancers. Regularly using cigarettes, cigars, smokeless products and pipes increases the risk of developing throat cancer. Heavy alcohol use, especially when combined with tobacco use, is also another risk factor.
