What is triple-negative breast cancer?
Receptors are proteins on cell surfaces. The three most important receptors for breast cancer are estrogen, progesterone and human epithelial factor receptor 2 (HER2). Triple-negative breast cancer cells lack these three types of tumor cell surface receptors. This means the cancer doesn’t depend on them to grow.

How we diagnose triple-negative breast cancer
About 10 to 20 percent of breast cancers are triple negative. Compared to other forms, triple-negative breast cancer tends to be more aggressive and spread more easily. That’s why getting regular mammograms is so important. This screening can catch a lump early before other triple-negative breast cancer symptoms develop and the disease has progressed. Schedule your mammogram at Goshen Retreat Women’s Health Center by calling (574) 364-4600.
Depending on your mammogram results, you may need a breast biopsy to look for cancer cells in a tissue sample. If cancer is found, your doctor runs more tests to get a complete diagnosis, including whether any of the three receptors are present.
Our triple-negative breast cancer treatment
Because triple-negative breast cancer doesn’t have certain receptors, hormone therapy and HER2 targeted therapy doesn’t work against triple-negative cancer. Goshen Center for Cancer Care specialists use surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy to treat triple-negative breast cancer.
Chemotherapy is usually highly effective in treating this type of breast cancer and shrinking the tumor before surgery. In addition to our cancer care center in Goshen, we offer chemotherapy in Warsaw as a convenience to our patients.
Triple-negative breast cancer treatment is an active area of study. You and your doctor can discuss whether a breast cancer clinical trial is appropriate for you.
In addition to these treatments, we provide care for your complete well-being, including naturopathic medicine and support groups with cancer patients and survivors. We’re here to maintain and protect your quality of life.
Whether you’re just starting your journey or need a second opinion, call (888) 492-4673 (HOPE) to make an appointment.
