General Information

Bronchiectasis is a chronic respiratory disease where the small passageways that deliver air to your lungs, the bronchioles, are thick from inflammation and infection.

The primary bronchiectasis symptom is breathing that becomes increasingly more difficult. Other signs and symptoms include coughing and wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, weakness and weight loss.

At Goshen Heart & Vascular Center, our Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program offers several innovative treatment options that can lead to your healing and restored quality of life. Our team of fellowship trained experts work together to create a plan that prioritizes your health and well-being. We believe that clinical collaboration leads to the best care for our patients.

For compassionate care for bronchiectasis, talk to your primary care provider about a referral to our program.

Determining the cause of bronchiectasis for effective treatment

The first step of finding a solution to bronchiectasis is getting to the root cause. Bronchiectasis is often caused by damage to the walls of your lung airways due to:

  • Infections, such as whooping cough, severe pneumonia and fungal infections in the lung
  • Diseases, including HIV/AIDS and cystic fibrosis
  • Airway blockages, such as food or foreign objects
  • Pulmonary aspiration, or inhaling food, liquid, saliva or vomit

Your doctor at Goshen Heart & Vascular Center will recommend a bronchiectasis treatment that opens up your airways and improves breathing. Treatment options include:

  • Medication to thin mucus
  • Antibiotics to fight infection
  • Inhaled bronchodilators to open airways
  • Inhaled corticosteroids to reduce swelling
  • Oxygen delivered from a tube or mask
  • Surgery to clear the airway or replace your lung
