Gallbladder Cancer

General Information

The gallbladder is the small sac that’s located under the liver. It helps digestion by storing and releasing bile that the liver makes. Gallbladder cancer often begins in the gallbladder’s lining. It’s a rare type of gastrointestinal cancer.

When it comes to treating cancer, including gallbladder cancer, at Goshen Center for Cancer Care, we use an integrative approach to address the cancer from different angles. This means our specialists come together to target the disease and ensure your best quality of life.

Gallbladder symptoms and causes

Because of the deep position of the gallbladder, it’s almost impossible to feel the tumor. Noticeable signs and symptoms often don’t appear until the disease advances and may include:

  • Jaundice, a yellowing of the eyes and skin
  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Fever
  • Lumps in the abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Weight loss or loss of appetite

The exact cause of gallbladder cancer isn’t known. However, certain conditions and lifestyle factors can increase the chances of getting the disease. These include:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Gallbladder polyps
  • Chronic gallbladder inflammation
  • Family history of gallbladder cancer
  • Age 65 or older
  • Female gender
