Recognizing influenza symptoms

Flu symptoms come on suddenly and can include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Sore throat

The flu is highly contagious. When an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks, people up to six feet away can also become infected. You can also get the flu from touching contaminated objects then your nose or mouth. People can become infectious 24 hours before symptoms appear, meaning you could spread the infection before you know you’re sick.

Treating and preventing the flu with urgent care

The best way to treat the flu is to get plenty of rest, fluids and medicine to treat symptoms. People in high-risk groups can be prescribed antiviral medications to fight the flu if concerned about their symptoms.
