Labral Tears

General Information

Both your hip and shoulder have a labrum, or a layer of cartilage that lines these ball-and-joint sockets. A labral tear happens when this cartilage is damaged. It’s a common sports injury that is often caused by overuse, such as repetitively throwing or rotating your hip joint, or trauma, such as a collision.

Goshen Orthopedics is equipped to treat your labral tear. We partner with our local community to help athletes of all ages enjoy their favorite activities and prevent injury.

If you have shoulder pain or a snapping hip, make an appointment with one of our providers by calling (574) 534-2548.

Signs you have a torn labrum

Pain is the primary symptom of a labral tear. Other labral tear symptoms include:

  • Popping, grinding or snapping in your hip or shoulder
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Feeling that the joint is unstable, locking up or catching
  • Loss of strength in the affected limb
  • Groin pain when walking or exercising

How we treat hip and shoulder labrum tears

Our team of board certified providers collaborate to create a treatment plan that addresses your specific needs. Labral tears take time to heal, but your pain should resolve in a few weeks. Our sports medicine specialists can show you ways to prevent or reduce your risk of another tear.

Labral tear treatment usually begins with rest and anti-inflammatory medications. We’ll also recommend physical therapy at Goshen Rehabilitation, located in our same building, to strengthen the muscles that surround the joint and restore stability. If these more conservative treatments aren’t effective, you may need corticosteroid injections or arthroscopic surgery to repair the cartilage.

Let us help you return to your favorite sport.
