Neuromuscular Disease
General Information
Neuromuscular diseases or disorders affect how the peripheral nervous system controls your voluntary muscles (the ones you move at will). These conditions are usually progressive, meaning they worsen over time.
At Goshen Orthopedics, we have a team of board certified providers who are committed to the community. We partner with other specialists to provide care for neuromuscular disease.
Types of neuromuscular conditions include:
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Muscular dystrophy
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
To make an appointment with one of our experienced, compassionate providers, call (574) 534-2548 .
Recognizing neuromuscular disease symptoms
The signs and symptoms of neuromuscular disorders vary depending on the conditions, but some common features are:
- Muscle weakness
- Falling or difficulty maintaining balance
- Muscle twitches and cramps causing pain
- Numbness or tingling sensation in certain parts of the body
- Double vision
- Drooping eyelids
- Difficulty swallowing
- Difficulty breathing
How we manage neuromuscular disorders
Our treatment recommendations depend on the type of neuromuscular disease and the underlying cause. Some of these conditions are genetic, while others are triggered by physical injury, viral infections, autoimmune disorders and dietary deficiencies. Sometimes, the cause is unknown.
Starting with the least invasive options, experts at Goshen Orthopedics create a treatment plan that’s personalized to your needs and considers your complete well-being.
Neuromuscular disease treatments include:
- Medications to manage pain and muscle spasms
- Physical and occupational therapy, offered through Goshen Rehabilitation, to maintain or slow down loss of muscle strength
- Adaptive tools, such as splints and mobility tools
