Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation
General Information
Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat overactive bladder (OAB) and associated symptoms like urinary urgency, frequency, and incontinence.
At our urology clinic, we specialize in PTNS to provide comprehensive care for bladder control issues. Contact us at (574) 533-8420 to schedule a consultation and determine if PTNS is suitable for you.
When is PTNS used? PTNS is recommended when traditional methods like medications or behavioral therapies haven't adequately improved OAB symptoms. It can also be an option for those who wish to avoid surgery or are not candidates for other interventions.
Your urologist may suggest PTNS to address:
- Overactive Bladder: PTNS helps calm the nerves that contribute to bladder overactivity, reducing the urgency and frequency of urination.
- Urinary Urge Incontinence: By modulating nerve signals, PTNS can improve control over bladder function, reducing episodes of leakage.
- Bladder Sensitivity: PTNS can help alleviate sensitivity issues, making bladder function more comfortable and predictable.
What happens during the procedure? During a PTNS session, a thin needle electrode is inserted above your ankle, near the tibial nerve. This is then connected to a stimulator device that delivers mild impulses that travel to the tibial nerve and then sacral nerve.
Sessions typically last around 30 minutes and are done weekly for several weeks. Most patients find the procedure comfortable and painless, with minimal side effects.
Benefits of PTNS
- Non-Surgical: PTNS doesn't require surgery or implants, making it a low-risk option.
- Effective: Many patients experience significant improvements in bladder symptoms after completing a course of PTNS.
- Well-Tolerated: PTNS is generally well-tolerated, with few reported side effects.
