Pneumonia
General Information
Pneumonia is a viral or bacterial infection of the lungs that causes inflammation. Aspirating food or liquid into the lungs, fungal infections and exposure to irritants are some causes of pneumonia. In healthy adults, pneumonia causes moderate symptoms. However, it’s a life-threatening condition for infants and older adults with existing health issues.
Dedicated providers at Urgent Care Goshen Physicians assess and treat pneumonia seven days a week. With extended hours on weekdays, our team provides quality urgent care for health concerns that aren’t life-threatening, including mild pneumonia. Visit our urgent care or call (574) 535-1700 to schedule an appointment.
Pneumonia symptoms you should know
A common symptom of pneumonia is wet cough, as the infection produces excessive phlegm and forces you to cough up white, yellow, green or brown mucus.
In addition to wet cough, you may also experience:
- Chest congestion, pain or tightness
- Fatigue
- Fever and chills
- Shortness of breath
When to go to the ER
A person’s overall health impacts how pneumonia affects them. In severe cases of pneumonia, the person may experience:
- High fever
- Gurgling sounds in the throat
- Moderate-to-severe shortness of breath
- Rapid, labored breathing
- Wheezing or whistling sound during breathing
- Confusion or lethargy
- Bluish color of the lips or fingernails
In high-risk groups, including adults with chronic diseases and immune system problems, pneumonia can be a serious condition. Always call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room for the symptoms listed above.
