Strep Throat

General Information

A common illness, strep throat accounts for about 15 to 30 percent of all sore throats in children and about 5 to 15 percent in adults. It’s caused by group A streptococcus (“strep”) bacteria. This bacteria spreads easily through sneezing, coughing and shaking hands.

What are strep throat symptoms?

Do you have a sore throat and pain when swallowing? You may have strep throat. Other signs of strep throat include:

  • Red or white patches in the throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes (glands) in the neck
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea

In rare cases strep throat can also cause a red, slightly raised skin rash.

Treating your sore throat

Strep throat treatment from Urgent Care Goshen Physicians can help your family fight off and prevent this infection. We usually use antibiotics to treat strep throat. Antibiotics only work on bacteria, so your provider will perform a strep test to see if bacteria are present. A strep test involves swabbing the back of your throat with a large cotton swab.

Symptoms typically improve within 24 hours of starting antibiotics, but it’s still important to finish the full course to kill all the bacteria.
