Symptoms of hearing loss

People with hearing loss often experience:

  • Difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments
  • Frequently asking others to repeat themselves
  • Trouble hearing high-pitched sounds, like birds singing
  • Feeling that people are mumbling
  • Needing to turn up the volume on the TV or radio

These symptoms can affect communication, social interactions and overall quality of life.

What causes hearing loss?

  • Ear infections or blockages: Earwax or other foreign materials can block the ear canal, ear infections or growths in the middle ear may cause hearing loss.
  • Genetic factors: Some types of hearing loss can be inherited.
  • Medications: Certain medications can cause or worsen hearing loss.
