Tinnitus
General Information
Do you hear a ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound in your ear(s) that no one else can hear? You might be experiencing tinnitus, a common condition that affects many people. Tinnitus is the perception of noise or ringing in the ears without an external sound source. It can vary in pitch and may be heard in one or both ears.
At Goshen Physicians ENT, Speech & Audiology, we understand how disruptive tinnitus can be to your daily life. Our team of specialists, including our audiologist and otolaryngologist, are dedicated to providing compassionate care and effective treatment options to help you manage your symptoms.
What Causes Tinnitus?
Tinnitus can be caused by several factors, including:
- Hearing loss: Age-related hearing loss or damage to the inner ear from exposure to loud noise.
- Ear infections or blockages: Earwax, fluid, or other foreign materials can block the ear canal and cause tinnitus.
- Head or neck injuries: Trauma to the head or neck can affect the inner ear, hearing nerves, or brain function linked to hearing.
- Medications: Some medications, such as antibiotics and diuretics, can cause or worsen tinnitus.
Tinnitus Management Options
While there is no cure for tinnitus, several treatments can help manage the symptoms:
- Sound therapy: Using white noise machines or maskers can effectively reduce or eliminate the tinnitus sounds.
- Hearing aids: Amplification can reduce or eliminate tinnitus symptoms for some patients with hearing loss.
- Medications: Certain medications can help reduce the severity of symptoms.
Our audiologist can work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your symptoms.
