Know your heart's performance with a thallium stress test
If your heart is showing signs that it’s not beating as it should, a thallium stress test can reveal what’s wrong. Also known as a nuclear stress test or cardiac stress test, this minimally invasive procedure provides an in-depth look at your heart’s blood performance – specifically how blood is flowing through your heart during periods of rest and exercise.
To provide the communities we serve with comprehensive heart diagnostic services, Goshen Heart & Vascular Center offers thallium stress testing in Goshen, IN. Talk to your primary care provider about getting a heart screening with us. If you don’t have a primary care provider, call (877) 566-4660 for a referral.
Do I need a thallium stress test?
The results from your thallium stress test will help your care team diagnose, treat and manage a heart and vascular condition.
You may need a thallium stress test if:
- You can’t maintain a high level of intensity during exercise
- You are experiencing chest pain or arrhythmia
- Your doctor needs to evaluate a previous heart treatment
- You recently had a stent
Your doctor may use a nuclear stress test along with another heart screening to get a complete snapshot of your heart health.
Getting a nuclear stress test at Goshen Heart & Vascular Center
The procedure can take up to four hours to complete. It begins with the placement of an IV that administers the thallium dye. After a 45-minute waiting period, the technician will perform a heart scan and then have you walk on a treadmill or use a stationary bike. Instead of physically exercising, you may be given a medicine that simulates the effects of vigorous exercise. Then, you’ll receive a final dose of thallium and a second heart scan.
Some people experience flushing, chest discomfort, palpitations and breathlessness during the test. Talk to your technician about ways to make your experience comfortable.
