From the Chief Nursing Officer
The Goshen Health 2020-2021 Nursing Report highlights the innovative, collaborative efforts to promote exceptional nursing practice during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Goshen Health nurses faced the uncertainty of a new virus with strength and dedication. Our nursing team cared for patients, their families, fellow Colleagues and our community. Our efforts to provide safe, high-quality care despite supply shortages, record numbers of patients and frequent changes in practice required perseverance and tenacity.
Our Colleagues are our most valuable resource. I am grateful for the supportive practices implemented to promote well-being and resilience during this highly stressful time. Chaplains routinely provided emotional and spiritual support for patients, families and Colleagues. The Goshen Health Foundation funded self-care retreats, allowing Colleagues time to rest, debrief and focus on healing in a beautiful environment. Colleagues participated in Resilience and Emotional Support Team (REST) meetings, finding the peer support invaluable. Our community offered generous donations of food along with messages of hope to support our Health Care Heroes.
Our Nursing Professional Practice Model is built on our values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence and is grounded in Jean Watson’s theory of Relationship-Based Care. I witnessed this in action as we delivered care for patients and cared for each other. Colleagues across the health system stepped up to fill newly-developed assistive roles to care for patients alongside the nursing team, empowering nurses to practice at their highest level.
As a leader in the region, we have a strong commitment to professional development, as demonstrated through our exceptional BSN and certification rates; we are growing the healthcare leaders of tomorrow. Evidence-based practice guides care delivery and our nurse-led research studies increased knowledge about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on newly licensed and experienced nurses.
Through it all, nursing continually supported the organization’s mission to improve the health of our community by providing innovative, outstanding care and services through exceptional people doing exceptional work. Our vision to be recognized as a national leader for excellence and patient-centered care reflects our commitment to the community we serve.
Please join me in celebrating the outstanding accomplishments of these exceptional nurses as we work together to advance nursing practice and deliver excellence to those we serve.
