Options for treating swollen and inflamed joints
Swelling and inflammation treatment is much the same no matter the cause. When you come to Goshen Physicians Orthopedics & Sports Medicine for care, we customize your treatment to your injury and personal needs.
Rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) is a proven treatment for joint swelling and inflammation.
- Rest the joint from activities that aggravate symptoms.
- Apply ice packs several times a day for 20-minute intervals. Instead of putting the ice directly on your skin, wrap a thin towel around the ice pack to protect your skin.
- Use a compression bandage around the joint.
- Elevate the joint higher than your heart while you rest it.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
NSAIDs treat joint pain and inflammation, which helps reduce swelling. You may need over-the-counter options, such as ibuprofen or naproxen. If your swelling and inflammation are severe, your provider may suggest stronger medications.
If other treatments fail to relieve joint inflammation, we may recommend a corticosteroid, or cortisone, injection. This treatment has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect that provides quick but temporary relief. Corticosteroids can also be taken by mouth.
Goshen Physicians Orthopedics & Sports Medicine can help
Early treatment for joint inflammation and swelling can prevent damage and improve function. If you have joint pain along with swelling and inflammation, our providers may have other treatment recommendations for you. Often, reducing swelling will also ease joint pain. This allows you to exercise or go to physical therapy to maintain joint function and strengthen supporting muscles.
We offer physical therapy through Goshen Rehabilitation, which is located in the same building at our center. To make your care as convenient as possible, our teams coordinate your appointments.
Don’t let joint swelling and inflammation keep you from enjoying your favorite activities. Call (574) 534-2548 to make an appointment with one of our board certified providers.
