Lymphoma is a blood cancer of lymphocytes, or a type of immune system white blood cell. Lymphoma occurs when abnormal cells live longer and divide faster than normal cells. The cancer sometimes starts in a lymph node or other lymphoid tissue. It can spread to the blood, bone marrow, organs or other lymph nodes.

The two main types of lymphoma are Hodgkin lymphoma (Hodgkin’s disease) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which is more common.

What are lymphoma symptoms?

Signs that you have lymphoma include:

• Fever or chills
• Lethargy
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Sweating
• Unintended weight loss
• Itching or rashes
• Increased infections
• Anemia

Since these symptoms are similar to those of the common cold or flu, it's important to see your doctor for the right diagnosis.

Treatment for Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma

Hodgkin’s disease is highly curable with radiation therapy and chemotherapy, is also available. In some cases, you may need a stem cell transplant to replace unhealthy blood cells with healthy ones.

Some people with slow-growing non-Hodgkin lymphoma don’t need treatment. Your doctor may wait until the disease progresses to protect your quality of life. If you have a more aggressive form, your treatment may involve chemotherapy, radiation therapy, biological therapy and stem cell transplant.
