Do I need outpatient Orthopedic occupational therapy?

When your musculoskeletal system including your bones, joints and muscles suffers trauma, Orthopedic occupational therapy can help you continue daily activities while you heal. After a work-related injury, you may need OT to help you continue your previous job with less difficulty. Chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, can also cause limited mobility because of stiffness and pain.

Your doctor may recommend occupational therapy to help you recover after experiencing:

  • Injury or fractures of elbow, wrist or hand
  • Hand, wrist or elbow conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis elbow or Golfer’s elbow
  • Joint replacement or Spinal surgery

Ask your doctor how outpatient Orthopedic OT can benefit you.

What to expect from outpatient occupational therapy

Before you begin OT, your occupational therapist at Goshen Rehabilitation will perform a thorough assessment to determine your unique needs and goals. We are dedicated to providing 1:1 clinician-to-patient sessions during your recovery process.

To help improve function of both your fine and gross motor skills, your OT treatment may include:

  • Exercise to improve range of motion, strength and function
  • Work modifications, including teaching you elbow, wrist and hand joint protection strategies
  • Pain, inflammation and joint treatments, such as manual therapy, exercise, use of heat/cold and/or modalities

Throughout your treatment, your therapist will evaluate your progress and suggest changes as needed.
