Osteoporosis
General Information
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes bones to weaken and become brittle. Once bones lose their bone density and strength, they are more prone to fractures. In fact, a broken bone is usually the first warning sign of osteoporosis.
At Goshen Orthopedics, we provide a comprehensive approach to treating osteoporosis –– from slowing down bone loss to caring for complications that come from the disease. We conveniently offer physical therapy and imaging services to provide all-around care for osteoporosis. Call (574) 534-2548 to make an appointment.
Our approach
The first step in confirming osteoporosis is to perform a bone scan, which is also known as a bone density scan. A bone scan is a type of X-ray that measures the amount of calcium and other minerals in your bone.
Our integrative approach to helping you live a full life includes a variety of treatment options. Under the guidance of your provider, your treatment plan may incorporate:
- Diet changes
- Low-impact exercises that help keep your bones strong
- Help with quitting smoking and reducing your alcohol consumption
- Medication to slow bone loss and help manage pain
The symptoms of osteoporosis aren’t always apparent –– that's why it’s called the silent disease. Experiencing a broken bone is usually the first symptom of osteoporosis. Other signs and symptoms include:
- Back pain
- Loss of height
- Hunched or stooped back
What causes osteoporosis?
Although women are more likely to develop osteoporosis, men also get the condition.
A number of factors can increase your chances of getting osteoporosis, including:
- A short and slender body frame
- A diet low in calcium and vitamin D
- Physical inactivity
