Cutting-edge new robotic technology now helps doctors reach distant areas of the lungs to biopsy lesions without invasive surgery at Goshen Center for Cancer Care.

The cancer center is the first facility in Indiana and one of the first in the United States to offer navigational robot-assisted bronchoscopy using the Galaxy System™ for the earlier diagnosis of lung cancer.

This next-generation technology improves access to outer areas of the lungs where most potentially cancerous nodules form. It also assists doctors in more accurate retrieval of tissue samples for biopsy.

“The Galaxy System gives us a way to detect cancer deep in the lungs and help patients get appropriate treatment at an earlier stage of the disease,” said Randy Christophel, Goshen Health President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are committed to being a leader in minimally invasive robotic-assisted options for patients in our community.”

Compared to other technologies to diagnose lung cancer, the Galaxy System has the potential to improve detection rates, according to studies.

“With the Galaxy System, we can reach the distant airways in real time,” said Muhammad “Sammy” Bostaji, MD, Interventional Pulmonologist at Goshen Center for Cancer Care. “We also can biopsy smaller pulmonary nodules with greater precision, which helps diagnose cancer earlier and get patients into treatment sooner.”

The Galaxy System is part of a comprehensive lung cancer program at Goshen Center for Cancer Care that includes a screening program with pulmonary and thoracic surgery oversight, multidisciplinary treatment and long-term surveillance.
